Vicki Hedley is truly committed to the wellbeing of women and their babies.  Her background in child birth and support service is extensive:

Certified Professional Midwife providing in home birth services, Co-founder and Co-Director of Seventh Moon Perinatal Support Services (www.seventhmoon.net), Certified Child Birth Educator, Certified Birth and Post partum Doula and Educator, And the Mother to five children!

She is beloved by her clients and patients and I am honored to have interviewed and featured her in my newsletter.

What is a Midwife?

What questions should I ask when choosing a Midwife?

One last bit of information Vicki Hedley wished to add! There is a great resource our community! Lonnie Morris -Certified Nurse Midwife, Doctorate in Nursing– is seeing patients and delivering at Palisades Hospital. Her office location address is : 234A Columbia Avenue Fort Lee, NJ 07024 201-567-0810

A Midwife is a skilled Health Care Practitioner providing expert care to women during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum.  Many Midwives also provide well-woman gynecological care throughout the entire life cycle.  Midwives have a unique philosophy of practice relating to their model of care. Midwives embrace the idea that pregnancy and birth are a healthy, normal process in a woman’s life cycle.  We support the relationship of mother and baby emotionally and physically.  As a Midwife we try to make a decision based on the wellbeing of this relationship rather than legal or financial concerns. Midwives are trained to assess the need for treatment based on the unique, individual needs of the woman and baby in front of us. And  thereby, minimize medical intervention while providing hands on care during labor and delivery. We educate and counsel our patient on the changes her body will undergo as a woman, during pregnancy, during labor, during delivery, postpartum and further into motherhood. What is a Birth Doula?
What is a Postpartum Doula?

Ask questions which relate to their experience, philosophy, prenatal care practices, birth practices and postnatal care practices. Before your interview write down a general idea about your birth preferences including an idea of what role you would like your Midwife to have in the birth and after care. Ask the Midwife what she would do in an emergency situation and what she considers an emergency situation. Ask who her other practicing partners are and who her back up obstetrician/gynecologist is in the case of an emergency. If not covered by insurance, ask how she handles finances. The bottom line is: can you trust the Midwife in front of you, meaning do you have a good feeling about the woman in front of you?

A Birth Doula is a skilled and trained woman who provides emotional, physical, informational and sometimes spiritual support to a woman and her partner during her birth, delivery and immediate postpartum period.

The role of a Postpartum Doula is to help provide support to family after baby is born. Her knowledge about the changes that come with a baby should be able to help the family emotionally adjust to their baby/babies. A Doula will help integrate baby into the family by offering a variety of assistance depending on what the family needs (such as help with baby, cooking, light house work and advice on providing for baby). Ultimately, a Doula will help support mom and help her bond with her baby.

Text Box: Information provided by Lactation Consultant Opal Horvat, IBCLC, RLC 223 Bloomfield St. Suite 114, Hoboken, NJ, (201)-981-8924, www.breastfeedingnj.com

How do I know if my baby is receiving enough milk?
Your baby is transferring enough milk in the first weeks if baby is gaining 1/2oz to 1 oz a day and needing a diaper change at least 5 times a day after the first 4 days. We also want a contented baby after feedings..... content in-arms and maybe with someone walking around.

My baby is growing so fast, how can I increase my milk supply?
Frequent feedings, some skin-to-skin time and eating oatmeal will help. After a few months, baby's metabolism changes and mom's production levels off, yet it's still enough. Nature is so smart.

Is there anything I can do (prenatal) to prepare for nursing?
Yes, read up, and attend a good class, like the one at Hoboken University Medical Center. In the labor room, let all those attending the birth be aware that you and baby will need at least an hour together skin-to-skin (allowing infant to find the breast on her own).... a time for mom, dad and newborn to bond.
Read up, and find every way possible to have as natural as possible labor and birth.

Should nursing hurt?
No!!.... if it hurts, you probably need to be seen by a Lactation Consultant.
If you're supplementing or if baby won't latch and suck rhythmically.... and if baby is less than one month old and you don't know how to do kangaroo mother care, seeing a Lactation Consultant would be a good idea.
Thank you Opal for your contribution! Opal Horvat is an amazing women and wonderful benefit to our community. She has helped countless women nurse and bond with their babies, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come. I am excited Opal and Carol Blane are at the 223 Bloomfield Location, down the hall from Bella Bellies Studio and Hoboken Prenatal Massage! A must stop location for Hoboken Mommies!
